Wednesday Men’s Thought

So many great memories many of us have of our brothers and reminders that show us the impact that a brother can have in our lives…
  • Why are brothers an important part of our lives?
  • How has a brother blood or otherwise impacted your life?
  • Have you ever fought with your brother?
  • How serious was it? Did it get resolved?
  • Why do we fight with someone who is so important in our lives?
  • Brothers fight…how about the worlds first set of brothers?
Please read Genesis 4:1-9
Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. And Abel also brought an offering-fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Two brothers both make an offering …one accepted and one rejected…
  • Has anyone ever felt like that?
  • So Cain was the first born…He was older…did that mean anything?
  • Able was a shepherd and Cain was a farmer…does that matter?
Cain brought his offering first…He was older and he went first…yet the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering…
  • But on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor and Cain was very angry…why?
  • The bible says that Cains face was downcast…Have you ever had your face be downcast?
The Lord asked Cain why are you angry and downcast…did God not know what he was thinking…
  • Why did God ask Cain these questions…?
  • Did Cain acknowledge the truth?
  • God shares with Cain the fail…If you do what is right will you not be accepted? So what was wrong?
God tells Cain that sin is crouching at your door and it desires to have you…
Have you ever sat crouched desiring something…
  • Can you envision sin crouched at your door?
  • Was God condemning Cain?
Imagine this scenario playing out…Cain gets so angry…
  • Have you ever gotten so angry you wanted to kill someone?
So Cain is pissed and he goes out to work the land…his job…He is ticked off at God…
Here comes his brothers stupid sheep…walking on his farmland…chomping his grass in his field…
His ground… the ground not good enough to produce an offering for God…
But that fattened sheep sure seems to love it…
If my stupid brother doesn’t get his stupid sheep off my land…sound familiar?
Before all this do you think he was angry with his brother?
Maybe he thought …I will show you who’s better…Abel…I’m older…bigger…stronger…you better not say one word…because I will smash your face…little brother…
So God asks Cain, where is your brother? Where is Abel?
God knew exactly where he was the blood cried out to the Lord…
  • Why do you think he was he asking?
  • Cain responds “I don’t know…am I my brothers keeper?”
  • So after he kills his brother…what does he ask God? Am I my brothers keeper?
  • So my question…who is your brother and are you his keeper?
God bless you this week and please feel free to post questions or comments I would love to hear from you
