Why do we serve?
What is serving?
1 Peter 4:10
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:”
The word serve can be defined as… “to act as a servant”, “to contribute to”. God’s word calls us to serve others. While our salvation cannot be earned by doing good works, our salvation compels us through love to do good works to serve God and others.
We see this in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”.
But verse 10 goes on to tell us that God has good works for us to do, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Jesus set the example
Mark 10:45
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus gave us the ultimate example of what it means to serve by giving up his very life. When we serve, we are following Jesus’ example. He acted as a servant and put others first.

Everyone has a part to play
Romans 12:4-5
“For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”
When we serve within the church, we are contributing to our local church and the greater Kingdom of God. The Holy Spirit has given us different gifts and abilities so that we can work together, just like the parts of a physical body function together as one.
No one can carry out all the operations of a church effectively on their own. There are different skills needed for serving in different areas, such as greeting and welcoming people as they come into church, serving in kids ministry, joining the security team, baking snacks for the café, cooking a meal for a family in need, helping on the tech team, organizing events, and so much more!
God’s design is for us to work together and when we do, it gives us the opportunity to make connections and friendships we otherwise wouldn’t have.

1 Corinthians 12:7
“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
When we serve, we get to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and have a lasting impact. The very definition of serving is not about yourself, but about others. God wants us to use the gifts He has given us to impact others. It’s about having an attitude that puts others before yourself.
Matthew 5:16
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
When we serve, it is a way to share God’s love and point other people to God!
