Have you ever signed up for a free trial of anything?

A 3 day trial a one week or one month trial….maybe a free year…

Why do you think they do things like that?

What is a trial?

A trial is a test of the performance, qualities, or suitability of something.

So we test it and decide whether we think it fits us or our lives….

What happens with trials….with tests….

Sometimes we pass…sometimes we fail…but with free trials…we forget to cancel…

And then we get automatically signed up for something that we didn’t necessarily want….

Have you ever been in a situation that you didn’t sign up for….Sin works that way too

Sin has a way of looking like a free trial…something good with no price at least for a time…

Sin is a disease that pollutes every part of our bodies and minds…

the Bible says our heart is deceitful above all things and is desperately wicked…

Why is it then that we don’t regard our sin as evil and dangerous?

why do we make excuses for it?

We go about cheating ourselves into the belief that sin is not quite as sinful as God says it is and that we are not as bad as we really are…do you believe that?

Why or why not?

Sin rarely presents itself to us in its true colors…

It doesn’t come right out and say I’m your deadly enemy…I’m about to deceive you…destroy you and send you to hell… Instead sin comes to us like a beautiful angel with a kiss and an outstretched arm and flattering words.

Like that free trial to HBO or skinemax…we tell ourselves that they have some good movies I can watch for free…but we know that theres ugly stuff attached to that FREE offer…

Sin rarely seems like sin in its beginnings…

It would seem that I have a problem inside that I don’t want or need in my life but it seems like its not me but its someone in me that keeps crying out for more of the things that I know are bad…

Romans 7 tells us this…verse 14-25

14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin…

What does that mean men?

As we read the Bible are we the only person caught in a struggle between good and evil?

David was a man loved by God yet he committed adultery with Bathsheba…and then he murdered her husband to keep him from discovering that she was pregnant…

David was driven to despair and he admitted ” my sins are over my head…they are too high for me…I can’t understand myself…there is no soundness in my flesh… there is no rest in my bones because of my sin… my loins are filled with a loathsome disease.”

We see that God loved David and while we were still sinners God loves us….

Does knowing that God loves us stop us from sinning?

How many of us want to be free of sin?

How do we stop?

We will often look all around us trying to find justification for our sins…but we must admit that we are sold under sin as a slave…

How can I be set free from my sinful nature?

The answer like in church is always Jesus but what does that mean?

How do you plug into the supernatural source of righteousness?

Is it enough to simply believe and be cured?

Is it enough to say freedom comes through faith?

Paul talks about the struggle of two men inside him…two laws at work in him…two minds seeking control…

How many have felt that way?

So what is needed for God to come down and break sins control?

  1. Believe we are all sinners…no one is innocent…we have all sinned…its important how we view our sin…the only way we can reach God is to first reach deeply into our own hearts and drag out all the filthy evil things hidden in there and lets Gods light expose it all
  2. We must believe that our sins make us slaves…in John 8:34 Jesus says that every man who commits sin is a slave…we have the power to choose our own master…that’s why Jesus came…we tell ourselves that we were born this way or blame God or our parents or our past but its not true…according to the truth of God we enslave ourselves by following our lusts to the point of no return…YOU MUST WANT FREEDOM….Victory is possible only when the truth shows dawns clear and final
  3. We must believe that God has made a plan for our freedom…God watched us struggle and said that is enough of that and He sent Jesus to free us from the power of sin…

Will believing in Jesus as my Lord cause all my evil desires to go away? Will I no longer be tempted if I repent and surrender my life to Christ? Will He change me? Will the passions that have an iron grip on me be broken…can I really be a new creation?

When Lincoln freed the slaves the issue of slavery died…not the salve master…not the slave…

The slave can walk away free saying to himself slavery is a dead issue…the old slave in me is dead…I am a free man…

When someone receives Jesus what is it in him that dies?
sin doesn’t die….Satan doesn’t die…the evil tendency doesn’t die…

The issue or the controversy dies…

Sin created a disagreement in the heart of man about who was in control and the battle between good and evil was the result…

When the Bible says we die to sin it simply means that to us…the issue is dead..

Theres no more argument…that matter is not negotiable…

Christ cant make you do right and Satan cant make you do wrong…but Christ declares we are free by faith but we must act as a free person….

Sin doesn’t die only the slavery to it dies…its power over me dies…

Nothing in me dies except the law that held me in sins control….

Sin is still present in me but I am no longer under its control….

We are free
